ALIZI - A MANIFESTO FOR MODERN CONSTRUCTION
November 18 – 24, 2023
Fabrika’s Exhibition Space
8 E. Ninoshvili St,. 0102
Tbilisi, Georgia
From November 18–24, Idaaf Architects presented the results of the Alizi Workshop at Fabrika exhibition space. The workshop explored the history and traditional methods of making Alizi (Adobe) while also developing a new design approach aimed at reviving its use in contemporary construction.
The Alizi Workshop took place in the summer of 2022 and included research and practical work with four selected participants. We studied Adobe Brick buildings in the village of Kvemo Magharo in Kakheti and in Kartli, the villages of Ruisi, Garejvari and Khidistavi. The workshop team also collected soil of ten different colours from various regions of Georgia and produced new Alizi brick modules and decorative wall tiles.
This initiative marks the first attempt to raise awareness of adobe and to define the conditions for its reintroduction into modern building practice. After three months of work, it became evident that adobe can be a competitive material in today’s construction industry, offering a sustainable alternative to conventional methods that have contributed to ecological crises and climate change. To ensure the bricks meet current construction standards, further research and testing, both in Georgia and abroad will be required in the coming years.
The exhibition showcased the outcomes created by participants: HAE by Mariam Papava; Domino by Jokola Kistauri; J (a crossed brick) by Elene Pichkadze; ES by Mea Miminoshvili; as well as the IAS & IAM Bricks installation by Idaaf Architects. The latter consists of two universal forms that interlock without the need for fasteners or fillers, allowing for the simple construction of pre-planned buildings. In addition, Idaaf Architects presented pieces from their Brick furniture collection, crafted in adobe.
The exhibiton was organized by Idaaf Architects.
