Project: “Aprili House” – Reconstruction of a Half-Century House
Total Area: 242 m2
Building Area: 220 m2
Location: Sighnaghi, Georgia
“April House” is located in Sighnaghi on 9 April Street. The current owners bought it in a ruined state a few years ago. The building is arranged on two floors, we can say it’s typical Sighnaghi house, with the glass galleries, rooms in the depths connected with half-glassed doors. In 2015, the reconstruction project was launched and its construction started with an attempt to return the identical visualization.
The bedrooms and the common spaces were separated in the building, two toilets were added, the communications were completely changed and the underground heating was installed. The interior is made in white and pastel colors. Existing doors and windows are kept in the interior. Furniture is made from the pine wood material.
During the renovations, “Zedashe” was discovered in the Northen part of the house. According to the Georgian tradition the best part of the harvest’s first grapes was pressed and made in an Icons name, believing it will bless the maker and the harvest will be fertile. While pouring Zedashe wine into the Qvevri, (Georgian clay pot for wine) owners would light candles, pray and ask God for a mercy. On certain Icon’s day, this sacrificial wine would be drunk in their honor, at the feast.
In the interior natural light source are glass galleries on the both floors and the rooms are lighted from the windows of the inner walls. “Aprili House” has stunning views on Sighnaghi Valley, Caucasus Mountains and Bodbe Monastery.
